    Blepharoplasty is a surgical correction of the eyelids, in which excess skin and, depending on the findings, fat pads are removed. It is performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both. It helps where sagging skin of the upper eyelids obstructs vision and creates a tired appearance, or where bags are visible under the eyes. The goal is a more open and refreshed look while preserving natural facial expression.   • Does health insurance cover eyelid surgery?

    Health insurance does not cover eyelid surgery performed for aesthetic reasons, and the patient pays for it. It is different for a functional indication, meaning where sagging skin of the upper eyelid demonstrably narrows the visual field. Such a finding is assessed by an ophthalmologist, and health insurance decides on coverage. We will discuss what applies in your case, and where to go for an assessment of your visual field, at the consultation.

  • Can I have only the upper or only the lower eyelids operated on?

    Yes, the upper eyelids can be operated on separately, the lower eyelids separately, or both during a single procedure. For the upper eyelids, sagging skin is most often addressed, and for the lower eyelids, fat pads and excess skin. The extent of the procedure also determines the price. The doctor will recommend what is suitable in your case at the consultation, based on the findings and what is bothering you.

  • Does eyelid surgery hurt and what anaesthesia is used?

    The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb, and you may feel touch or pulling, not pain. The surgery itself usually takes 45 to 90 minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis, so you do not have to stay overnight. After the procedure, you go home accompanied by an adult. In the following days, the eyelid tends to feel tight and tender, which is an expected reaction to the procedure. If pain is troubling you, contact us and we will discuss the next steps.

  • How long does recovery take and when can I return to work and sport?

    Stitches are removed 5 to 7 days after surgery. Swelling and bruising around the eyes settle down within 7 to 14 days and are usually most pronounced in the first few days. Most patients return to work after 7 to 10 days, depending on the type of job and how quickly they heal. Light activity, such as walking, can be resumed after just a few days, but postpone intensive sport for 3 to 4 weeks. While healing, protect the area from the sun, avoid bending forward and lifting heavy objects in the first few days, and sleep with your head elevated.

  • When can I start wearing contact lenses again?

    We recommend stopping contact lenses one week before surgery and not putting them back in until 2 weeks after surgery at the earliest. Use glasses until then. Handling a lens near a freshly operated area irritates it and impairs healing. If you wear lenses all day and do not have glasses, tell us when scheduling your appointment.

  • Will the scars be visible and when does the result settle?

    The incision follows the natural crease of the upper eyelid or runs just below the lashes of the lower eyelid, so once healed, the scars are inconspicuous and gradually fade. A significant improvement is visible once the swelling has gone down, which is roughly 2 to 3 weeks. The final result settles over the following weeks, as the tissue completes healing. The result is long-lasting and usually persists for many years, though natural ageing continues. You can support the healing of the scar by protecting it from the sun and following the instructions you receive after surgery.

  • What are the risks and possible complications?

    After surgery, swelling, bruising, redness, and temporarily reduced sensitivity around the eyelid are common. Temporary watering or a feeling of dry eye can occur, along with temporary asymmetry between the eyelids, which corrects itself during healing. As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, wound infection, and impaired scar healing. Rare complications include incomplete eyelid closure (lagophthalmos), lower eyelid retraction, persistent dry eye, and, very rarely, bleeding behind the eye. The risk is reduced by a pre-operative examination, not smoking, and following the instructions given after surgery; should sudden severe eye pain, pressure behind the eye, rapidly increasing swelling of one eye, or worsening vision occur after surgery, seek emergency medical care without waiting for your check-up.

  • Who is eyelid surgery not suitable for?

    We do not perform the surgery during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or during an active infection in the eye area. We also do not perform it in cases of uncorrected thyroid dysfunction, uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a blood clotting disorder. For serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma or dry eye syndrome, the doctor decides individually after an examination. Smoking impairs healing and increases the risk of complications, which is why you should not smoke before or after surgery. Do not stop blood-thinning medication on your own; the timing and method of stopping it are determined by the doctor who prescribed it, and we discuss your health and allergies at the consultation before the pre-operative examination.
